Make the world a better place: be selfish! / Torna o mundo melhor: sê egoísta! ;-)

(versão portuguesa abaixo)

You are the most important person in your life! No one else is worth that you do not enjoy your life. Actually nothing is more important then YOU, and nothing is worth not enjoying life. If there is a though, a feeling or a person that prevents you from fully enjoying your life: get rid of it or change your point of view about it, either way go on and enjoy your life.

Does this sounds too strong, too selfish? To me too, but I come to realize that anything less then enjoying life is not enough for me. I grow up learning that I should be polite and friendly to others, that I should help others. But what really happens when I do that?

What really happens when I don´t take the time and attention to myself and put others in front is that I get in a bad mood, irritated... I give time and attention but I expect something in return: time, attention, friendship, thankfulness from the other, and so on. And when that doesn´t come from the other, I get upset and blame the other for all the things going wrong on my life.

Let´s take a deep breath, here. A long, deep breath into the belly. And another one. Yes, just take your time and breathe: slowly and deep. Take another conscious breath. Be aware of the air going through your nose, throat, lungs, deep into your belly.

What I just describe sounds familiar to you? Just as you get up from bed you are already thinking about what others need from you, what can you do, what do you have to do. And then suddenly you feel unhappy, irritated and others around you seem to have all sort of problems (from your point of view) and should behave differently (also from your point of view).

To me at a point, all this story (that kept repeating every day, except when I was in loved) stop making sense. And the answer to get out of this is to put yourself first. If you need time alone, just let other people around you know it and take time for yourself.

Maybe you think that others will get upset or angry with you, but that is their problem: remember you are the most important person in your life (not others).

When you do take time for yourself, and attend first to your needs, afterwards you will have space for others. And at this point it will be an unconditional space/time/love - meaning that you will not need to get something in return. If you get nothing in return it will still be OK, because you do not need it, you have already given yourself what you need.

A practical example with a couple. The woman get up after a bad night sleep, tired and without energy. She needs to take a time for herself but instead she goes and prepares breakfast for her and her husband and cleans the kitchen. Her husband also had a bad night sleep and is also not feeling well, but as he sees her preparing breakfast he seats by her. He is not in a good mood and speaks no word and also doesn´t feel like helping cleaning the kitchen (it was her decision to clean it and he feels tired). At this point she is very irritated and starts arguing with him: he never helps with the tasks at home and doesn´t talk so much with her, probably he doesn´t love her anymore,.... (I guess you got the picture).

The other possibility would be that she awakes, realizes that she doesn´t feel well. She decides that she needs some time alone and to listen to some soothing music. She tells her husband that she will take some time alone. After 20 minutes of breathing, relaxing and listening to music she feels good again. They both prepare a small breakfast together (as they don´t have so much time any more) and enjoy each others company for some minutes.

So, which one do you choose? Being selfish is the best thing you can do for yourself and for the others. Giving to yourself first is the only way you can really give to others (giving expecting something in return is not really giving).

Dare to put yourself first! YOU are the most important person in your life. YOU are the only person you can not live without. YOUr opinion about yourself is the only that really matters.

Love yourself and the world will be yours!

------------
